I Want to Be the Orange
I want to be the orange.
The blueberry has merits –
special powers relative
to its size (a superfruit!)
– but is too easily lost,
tiny, accidentally
squashable, dusty, inter
rupted by its husky stalk,
soft, hard, sharp, sour, out-of-time.
I want to be the orange.
I want to be generous
and tough, vibrant and yielding,
delighted and protected,
largely idle, throwable
and catchable, and beaming
all the while – able to spare
my golden afterglow, so
sure am I that I was there.
